This house was built ca 1765 in Rowan County, North Carolina by a German settler from Pennsylvania. Photo is courtesy of the Travel and Promotion Division, Department of Natural and Economic Resources, State of North Carolina. The first Germans to arrive was in 1747 and 1748 by Swiss Germans. From then on, a flux of Germans began arriving and settling in Alamance, Guilford and Orange Counties. In 1747 the Pennsylvania Dutch arrived and settled in Davidson, Rowan, Cabarrus, Stanly, Iredell, Wilkes, Catawba and Lincoln Counties. By 1765, large congregations of Germans were in the piedmont districts of North Carolina. |
