Governor Arthur Dobbs

The Royal Governor Arthur Dobbs of North Carolina originated from Ulster, Ireland when he applied for land grants at the head of the Cape Fear River upon which he intended to settle 120 persons who intended to have the potash trade, raise hemp and produce. The request was granted in in 1736 these people settled along the Black River on what is now Duplin County. Dobbs became governor in 1754.  He was active in attempting to set the church on a firm road to establishment, yet when he died in 1765 his funeral had to be conducted by a magistrate because a priest of the Church of England could not be found within a hundred miles.
